Dr. Santos Vales
Dr. Santos Vales, a Puerto Rican-American and a distinguished clinician in the NYC boroughs, is a psychologist at the Spanish Specialty Psychiatry Clinic, The Rafael Tavares Clinic, at Columbia University Medical Center/ New York Presbyterian Hospital. His clinical work has been centered on the provision of mental health services to clients of primarily Latina/o/x descent through the utilization of customized interventions that uniquely serve this population. Dr. Vales has additionally trained and supervised mental health clinicians in culturally-responsive service delivery, in both the Spanish and English languages.
Dr. Vales received a bachelor’s degree from CUNY, and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Columbia University and has had extensive work in substance use and recovery. Dr. Vales’ work emphasizes the importance of appreciating culturally-informed approaches to care that match the needs of clients of color and works diligently to facilitate mental health services that facilitate optimal healing.
Dr. Vales also currently functions as a professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center and has two private practices in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
